Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said he expects to become a major target of opposition politicians if President Bola Tinubu loses the 2027 presidential election.
Wike specifically mentioned former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, saying his strong support for Tinubu’s re-election has placed him at considerable political risk should the opposition take power.
The FCT minister made the remarks during a media interaction in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he spoke about his continued backing of Tinubu despite remaining a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
According to Wike, he is fully aware of the possible consequences of his political position but has no intention of withdrawing his support for the President.
He maintained that if Tinubu loses the 2027 election, he expects those who oppose the President to come after him because of his prominent role in supporting the administration.
Wike said his political activities are currently centred on ensuring Tinubu secures another term in office, adding that he would not sit back and allow Atiku or Obi to emerge victorious.
The former Rivers State governor has been at odds with Atiku since the 2022 PDP presidential primary, where Atiku emerged as the party’s candidate ahead of the 2023 election.
His relationship with Obi has also been politically contentious, particularly after Wike backed Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election despite Obi contesting under the Labour Party.
Wike further defended his decision to remain actively involved in Rivers State politics, dismissing reports that his frequent visits to the state indicate plans to relocate from Abuja.
He explained that his visits were aimed at maintaining contact with his political supporters and monitoring developments ahead of the 2027 elections.
The minister also expressed confidence in the progress of infrastructure projects being implemented by the FCT Administration under Tinubu.
Wike disclosed that 107 capital projects had been initiated under the current administration, with 76 already completed. He said additional projects would be commissioned before the 2027 election, while the remaining ones would be completed before the end of Tinubu’s tenure.
He also stated that the FCT Administration had completed 23 of 25 projects inherited from former President Muhammadu Buhari, while work continued on the remaining two.
According to Wike, six of eight projects inherited from the administrations of former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Umaru Yar’Adua had also been completed.
The FCT minister maintained that he would continue to defend the Tinubu administration and work toward its re-election despite criticism from political opponents.
