Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Nigeria after representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi, India.
Shettima’s return followed a series of diplomatic and economic engagements during his visit, where he represented Nigeria at discussions involving leaders and senior officials from emerging economies.
At the summit, the Vice President presented President Tinubu’s position on the need to reform global governance structures and international financial institutions to make them more inclusive and responsive to developing countries.
Shettima also used the BRICS platform to highlight Nigeria’s economic potential, particularly its position as a major gateway to Africa’s expanding market under the African Continental Free Trade Area.
His participation was part of Nigeria’s broader efforts to deepen cooperation with emerging economies and strengthen the country’s economic and diplomatic relationships.
During his stay in New Delhi, the Vice President held discussions with several international stakeholders, including the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
The meeting provided an opportunity to reaffirm Nigeria’s commitment to multilateral cooperation and efforts toward building a more inclusive global economic system, according to the report.
Nigeria became a BRICS partner country in 2025, giving the country an additional platform for strengthening South-South cooperation and expanding economic relations with major emerging economies.
Shettima’s participation in the summit also came as Nigeria and India pursue stronger economic ties, including efforts to expand bilateral trade, investment and cooperation in strategic sectors.
With his return to Nigeria, the Vice President is expected to continue engagements around the economic and diplomatic priorities advanced during the international trip.
