The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced capacity-building for its personnel as part of efforts to improve voter confidence and strengthen preparations for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
The training is focused on equipping electoral officers with the knowledge and communication skills required to effectively engage voters and address concerns that could affect participation in the electoral process.
INEC has continued to emphasise the importance of strategic voter education ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly in an environment where misinformation, rumours and misconceptions can influence public perception of the electoral process.
The commission’s preparations come as Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general elections, with INEC working to improve communication, inclusivity and public understanding of election procedures.
The electoral body has also projected that the country’s registered voter population could exceed 100 million once the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration process is finalised. This would make Nigeria the largest electoral democracy in Africa by voter population.
With such a large electorate expected, effective communication between INEC and citizens will remain critical. Electoral personnel are therefore expected to play an important role in providing accurate information, clarifying election procedures and countering misleading claims.
The training is part of broader measures aimed at ensuring that voters have greater confidence in the electoral system and are adequately informed before casting their ballots.
INEC’s efforts also reflect the growing need for stronger voter education as preparations intensify for the 2027 polls. The commission has previously called on its officers to adopt continuous and strategic approaches to voter education while remaining alert to misinformation and false narratives.
