…twoThe Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has raised concerns over voter apathy, vote buying and the spread of misinformation and disinformation ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

The electoral commission stressed the need for stronger voter education and grassroots enlightenment to encourage Nigerians to participate actively in the electoral process and protect the integrity of the polls.

INEC’s warning comes as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify, with stakeholders increasingly focusing on factors that could undermine voter participation and confidence in the electoral system.

Voter apathy remains a major concern, particularly as declining turnout has become a recurring issue in recent Nigerian elections. INEC has consequently continued to emphasise the importance of voter education and public awareness campaigns.

The commission has also identified vote buying as a threat to credible elections, warning that the practice can influence voters and undermine the principle of free choice at the ballot box.

Beyond vote buying, the spread of false information has emerged as another challenge ahead of the 2027 polls. Misleading claims and disinformation can create confusion among voters, damage public confidence and potentially discourage citizens from participating in elections.

INEC has therefore called for increased collaboration among electoral stakeholders, civil society organisations, community groups and other relevant institutions to strengthen voter education across the country.

The commission’s position aligns with broader calls for intensified efforts to combat vote buying and voter apathy before the 2027 elections.
