The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has commenced a nationwide inspection of federal road projects serving tertiary institutions across the country.
The exercise is aimed at assessing the condition and quality of roads used by students, examining their impact on daily movement and identifying areas that may require government attention.
The first phase of the inspection covered parts of Kaduna and Kano states, including the Kaduna-Abuja and Kaduna-Kano roads.
According to NANS President, Dist. Comr. Babatunde Afeez Akinteye, the initiative is designed to provide the students’ body with firsthand information about federal road projects connecting students to their institutions.
NANS Inspects Kaduna-Abuja Road
The exercise began in Kaduna State with an inspection of an ongoing Federal Government road construction project along the Kaduna-Abuja route.
Particular attention was given to the section of the road passing through the Federal Co-operative College, Kaduna, which NANS said serves as an important access route for students.
Akinteye noted that the condition of such roads directly affects students’ ability to move to and from their institutions.
The NANS leadership subsequently proceeded to Kano State to inspect the Kaduna-Kano Road, including the section serving Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education.
Students Comment On Road Improvements
NANS said the section of the Kaduna-Kano Road serving Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education was in good condition and that improvements had made movement easier for students around the institution.
During the visit, Akinteye also interacted with students and the Students’ Union leadership on issues relating to infrastructure and students’ participation in matters affecting their welfare.
He encouraged students to remain engaged with government policies and development projects that directly affect their education and daily lives.
Students of Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, according to NANS, commended President Bola Tinubu and Works Minister David Umahi over the road project, saying the improvement had reduced transportation difficulties.
NANS Plans Further Inspections
The students’ body said the nationwide exercise will continue across other parts of Nigeria.
NANS intends to assess the quality of federal road projects serving tertiary institutions, examine their effect on students and identify challenges requiring attention.
Akinteye said the exercise would eventually produce an official report containing the association’s observations and recommendations.
The association also said it would continue advocating projects and policies aimed at improving students’ welfare and the infrastructure supporting access to tertiary institutions.
