Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has criticised governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) over their opposition to political alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Wike described the governors as “politically lazy” while reacting to the position of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) on his reported involvement in a proposed opposition Rainbow Coalition.
The FCT minister made the remarks during an interview with ARISE News, following the forum’s decision to reject any political alliance that could operate outside the official structure of the APC.
Wike Denies Approaching APC Governors
Wike said he had never approached the APC Governors’ Forum seeking an alliance or asking its members to participate in his political activities.
He argued that the governors had misunderstood the nature of his political engagement and said his support for President Bola Tinubu should not be interpreted as an attempt to undermine the APC.
“There is no day I went to the Governors’ Forum to align with any rainbow coalition,” Wike said, according to reports of the interview.
The minister maintained that his political activities were focused on supporting Tinubu and that he was not required to seek approval from state governors for his political decisions.
APC Governors Reject External Alliances
The dispute followed a resolution by the Progressive Governors Forum, chaired by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma.
The APC governors said they would not support political alliances or structures outside the ruling party and maintained that APC members should work toward the success of the party and its candidates.
The forum’s position was interpreted as a response to the emergence of the Rainbow Coalition and concerns surrounding political arrangements ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Wike, however, rejected the suggestion that his activities were directed against the APC or President Tinubu.
Wike Questions Governors’ Political Strategy
The former Rivers State governor also questioned the ability of some APC governors to deliver the expected electoral support for Tinubu in their respective states.
He argued that rather than focusing on his political activities, the governors should concentrate on building support for the president within their states.
Wike’s comments have added to an ongoing public disagreement involving the FCT minister, the APC Governors’ Forum and political actors preparing for the 2027 elections.
The development comes as political realignments and coalition discussions continue ahead of the next general elections, with various political figures and groups debating possible alliances and electoral strategies.
