Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.

The actor’s family confirmed his passing on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, in an announcement shared by his son, Olusoji Jacobs. The family described him as a beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle, referring to him as the “Lion of Lufodo.”

The family also appealed to bloggers and social media influencers to respect their privacy as they mourn the veteran actor.

Born on July 11, 1942, Olu Jacobs built a career spanning theatre, television and film. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London before working in British theatre and television and later establishing himself as one of Nigeria’s prominent actors.

Jacobs became a major figure in Nollywood, appearing in numerous Nigerian productions and earning recognition for his performances over several decades.

Beyond acting, he was involved in the development of the Nigerian performing arts. He and his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, co-founded the Lufodo Group, which includes the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts.

His contributions to the entertainment industry were also recognised with several honours. He received the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2007 and was conferred with the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011.

Jacobs had celebrated his 84th birthday on July 11, 2026.

His death brings to an end the life and career of one of Nigeria’s most recognisable veteran actors, whose work across theatre, television and film spanned more than five decades.
