The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has recovered the body of a man following the collapse of a four-storey uncompleted building in Enugu State.

The building reportedly collapsed at about 6:00 a.m. on Sunday in the Independence Layout area of Enugu.

According to NEMA Press Unit official, Manzo Ezekiel, the agency’s Director-General, Zubaida Umar, quickly deployed an emergency rescue team from the Enugu Operations Office after receiving information about the incident.

Rescue personnel arriving at the scene discovered that some people might have been trapped beneath the debris and immediately began search and rescue efforts.

Heavy equipment, including an excavator, was brought in to assist responders in removing the rubble and gaining access to areas of the collapsed structure.

The joint rescue team recovered the lifeless body of a male victim at approximately 11:20 a.m., several hours after the building came down.

NEMA said rescue operations were still ongoing as officials continued searching through the debris to determine whether additional victims were trapped underneath.

The operation is being carried out jointly by NEMA, the Enugu State Emergency Management Agency, the Nigeria Police, the Fire Service, the Ministry of Works and the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority.

Authorities have continued efforts at the site as they work to establish the full extent of the incident and ensure that any remaining victims are located.
