The Federal Government has rejected allegations that Nigeria or the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) supported the recent failed coup attempt in neighbouring Niger Republic.
Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, dismissed the claims as false and irresponsible, saying they were designed to mislead the public and damage Nigeria’s reputation.
The minister made the clarification in a statement issued on Thursday following reports circulating on social media alleging that Nigeria and ECOWAS were behind the attempted takeover.
Enikanolaiye said the Nigerian government has never supported military coups or any unconstitutional change of government.
He stressed that Nigeria remains committed to constitutional democracy, the rule of law and political stability across West Africa and the wider African continent.
FG Rejects Allegations Against Nigeria
According to the minister, the allegations linking Nigeria to the failed coup attempt were baseless and should not be allowed to create unnecessary tension between neighbouring countries.
He said the claims suggesting that ECOWAS backed the operation were equally unfounded.
The Federal Government maintained that its position on unconstitutional changes of government remains consistent and that Nigeria would not support efforts to seize political power through military means.
The clarification comes amid heightened political and security tensions in the Sahel region, where Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso are governed by military-led administrations.
Failed Coup Attempt In Niger
The allegations emerged after a group of Nigerien soldiers attempted to challenge the country’s military authorities in late August.
The mutiny targeted strategic locations in Niamey, including a military facility at Diori Hamani International Airport and areas around the presidential palace.
The Nigerien authorities eventually regained control of the situation, with Russian Africa Corps forces assisting government troops during the confrontation.
The attempted coup represented a major challenge to Niger’s military government, which has been led by General Abdourahamane Tiani since the 2023 overthrow of elected President Mohamed Bazoum.
Nigeria Reaffirms Commitment To Democracy
Enikanolaiye said Nigeria would continue to support democratic governance and constitutional order across the region.
He also urged the public to be cautious about unverified information circulating online, particularly claims capable of creating diplomatic tension between countries.
The minister’s statement is expected to ease concerns over Nigeria’s alleged involvement in the Niger crisis as the government continues to distance itself from claims that it played a role in the failed coup.
Nigeria and Niger have experienced strained relations since the 2023 military takeover in Niger and subsequent disputes involving ECOWAS.
