The Tinubu Media Volunteers (TMV) has commended the Federal Government for releasing funds to settle eight months of accumulated allowances owed to eligible academic staff in federal tertiary institutions.

The payment covers the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) for academic staff from January to August 2026.

In a statement, TMV Chairman, Chukwudi Enekwechi, and Secretary, Segun Ogedengbe, described the development as a demonstration of the Federal Government’s commitment to its agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The group said the payment would cover eligible academic staff across federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.

According to TMV, the settlement could contribute to greater stability in the tertiary education system and reduce disruptions to academic activities associated with industrial actions.

The group said the payment was particularly significant in view of previous disruptions experienced by Nigerian tertiary institutions as a result of disputes between academic unions and government authorities.

TMV also commended the payment of salaries and other allowances to workers in tertiary institutions, as well as assurances concerning retirement benefits for academic and non-academic retirees.

The group said the latest development represented progress in efforts to address longstanding disagreements between the Federal Government and academic unions.

TMV expressed the hope that continued implementation of agreements reached between the government and university workers would contribute to a more stable academic calendar across the country.
