The Nigeria Police Force has arrested and paraded four suspects, including two medical doctors, over their alleged involvement in an organ-harvesting and human-trafficking syndicate operating in Nasarawa State.
The suspects were presented by the police amid investigations into allegations that vulnerable individuals were recruited and exploited for the removal and sale of human organs.
According to the police, the investigation uncovered a network allegedly involved in trafficking people and facilitating illegal organ removal.
The arrest of the suspects is part of an ongoing investigation aimed at identifying the full structure of the alleged syndicate and determining the roles played by each person involved.
The case has drawn attention to concerns surrounding illegal organ trafficking in Nigeria, particularly the exploitation of financially vulnerable individuals who may be deceived with promises of employment, financial assistance or other opportunities.
Police authorities said the suspects would be subjected to further investigation as detectives work to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged activities.
The development also comes as authorities continue efforts to tackle human trafficking and other forms of organised criminal activity involving vulnerable members of the public.
Meanwhile, one alleged victim, Samuel Ezekiel, has reportedly recounted how he was deceived by an acquaintance and eventually underwent a kidney removal procedure. He alleged that his friend initially told him they were going to a hospital, without explaining that he was being recruited as an organ donor.
Ezekiel further alleged that his identity was changed before the procedure and that he was taken through a process involving medical tests and documentation before undergoing surgery.
The Nigeria Police Force has continued its investigation into the alleged organ-harvesting network, while the suspects remain in custody as authorities work to establish whether additional individuals were involved.
The investigation is expected to shed more light on how the alleged network operated and whether other victims may have been targeted.
Authorities are also expected to determine the appropriate charges against the suspects once investigations are concluded.
