The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Paul following allegations that he seriously injured his 10-year-old daughter as punishment for bed-wetting.

The incident reportedly occurred in Upemen Community, within Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State. The man is accused of using a hot iron on the child’s private area, leaving her with severe injuries.

The state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr Seun Osamaye, disclosed the development during a visit to the child at the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, where she is undergoing treatment.

Osamaye said the state government intervened after the case was brought to the ministry’s attention. She confirmed that the suspect had been arrested and transferred to the police in Owo for investigation and prosecution.

According to the commissioner, the girl has already undergone one surgical procedure but will require another operation involving skin grafting as part of her recovery.

She said the government remained committed to protecting children from abuse and ensuring that victims receive the medical and other support they require.

The Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, Dr Adeyinka Aiyeyemi, commended the state government for its intervention and recommended psychological support for the child’s parents.

Aiyeyemi also confirmed that another skin-grafting procedure would be necessary to aid the minor’s recovery.

Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer in Ondo State, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed the arrest.

Jimoh said detectives from the ‘A’ Division in Owo responded promptly after receiving the report and took the suspect into custody.

He added that the matter had been referred to the gender unit for a detailed investigation and further action in accordance with the law.

The case has renewed attention on the need for stronger protection of children against physical abuse and harmful forms of punishment.
