The 2027 general elections, insecurity and Nigeria’s economic challenges are set to take centre stage at the seventh annual lecture organised by Freedom Online.

The event is scheduled to hold on September 3 in Lagos and is expected to bring together prominent political figures, journalists and other stakeholders to examine issues affecting the country ahead of the 2027 elections.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is expected to serve as the Special Guest Speaker at the lecture, while former Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, will chair the event.

Former Ogun State Governor, Senator Gbenga Daniel, is billed to attend as the Special Guest of Honour. The President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors and Editor of Vanguard, Eze Anaba, will serve as the Chief Host.

According to a statement by Freedom Online Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief, Gabriel Akinadewo, the organisers chose insecurity as one of the major themes because of its growing impact on Nigeria’s stability and development.

Akinadewo said the lecture would examine how insecurity, including electoral violence and thuggery, could affect the conduct and outcome of the 2027 elections.

He also raised questions about the credibility of the next general election and whether its outcome would create a strong foundation for Nigeria’s future.

The organisers are expected to examine the responsibilities of politicians, security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission before, during and after the elections.

According to the organisers, addressing insecurity is important because of its links with poverty, underdevelopment and other social challenges.

The lecture will therefore provide an opportunity for participants to discuss possible solutions to Nigeria’s security and political challenges while considering the country’s future after the 2027 elections.

The event is expected to attract political leaders, media professionals, policymakers and other stakeholders interested in Nigeria’s democratic development.
