The Oyo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has established a five-member committee to coordinate a public debate ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The initiative is designed to create an opportunity for candidates to outline their policies, programmes and plans to the electorate, while enabling voters to gain more information about the contenders and their positions on key issues.

The committee will be headed by Mr Olayinka Agboola, while Mr Oluseye Ojo will serve as secretary. Other members of the panel are Mrs Oyebukola Oriowo, Mrs Omolola Alamu and Mr Olusoji Ajibola.

The council announced the committee in a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Mr Akeem Abas, and Secretary, Temidayo Adu.

According to the NUJ leadership, the committee is expected to engage relevant stakeholders and develop an appropriate framework for conducting the debate in a credible and successful manner.

The union said further information concerning the programme, including the date, location, format and candidates expected to participate, would be made public as preparations advance.

The Oyo NUJ also urged political parties, candidates, civil society groups and other interested stakeholders to cooperate with the initiative.

The council said the proposed debate is part of efforts to encourage issue-focused political discussions and contribute to stronger democratic participation in Oyo State.

It added that the engagement would give members of the public an opportunity to hear candidates discuss their respective ideas and programmes, providing voters with relevant information as they prepare for the 2027 elections.
