The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has congratulated Nigeria’s Falconets after they secured a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup with a 3-0 victory over England.
Nigeria produced a commanding performance in Thursday’s Round of 16 encounter after finishing second in Group F.
The Falconets sealed the win through goals from Tosin Rafiu, Janet Akekoromowei and Mary Mamudu, booking their passage into the last eight of the competition. It was Nigeria’s second victory over England in four meetings at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
CAF Celebrates Nigeria’s Progress
Following the result, CAF took to its official X account to applaud the Nigerian team for reaching the quarter-finals.
The continental football body highlighted the Falconets’ achievement and welcomed their progress to the final eight of the tournament.
Nigeria’s victory also extended its campaign at the competition, with the team now preparing for another knockout-stage challenge.
Falconets Face Colombia
The Nigerian side will meet Colombia in the quarter-finals after the South American team defeated hosts Poland on Thursday.
The upcoming fixture will renew a previous World Cup meeting between the two teams. Nigeria and Colombia last faced each other at the U-20 Women’s World Cup in the 2010 semi-final, where the Falconets recorded a 1-0 victory through an early goal from Ebere Orii.
The quarter-final between Nigeria and Colombia is scheduled to take place in Łódź on Sunday, with a semi-final place at stake.
Uzoma Credits Team’s Determination
Falconets captain Christianah Uzoma attributed the victory over England to the team’s determination and refusal to bow out of the competition.
Uzoma, who made several important saves during the match, including stopping Rachel Maltby’s penalty from finding the net, said the players were determined to continue their World Cup campaign.
She also revealed that the squad’s ambition goes beyond reaching the quarter-finals, with the players targeting a place in the final and ultimately the World Cup title.
Nigeria will now turn its attention to Colombia as the Falconets continue their pursuit of further progress at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
