Tinubu to Deliver Independence Day Address on October 1

President Bola Tinubu to address Nigerians on October 1, 2026

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to address Nigerians on October 1, 2026, as part of activities marking the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

The Federal Government is planning a low-key celebration this year, with an Inter-Ministerial Committee established to coordinate events leading up to the anniversary.

The committee was inaugurated in Abuja on Thursday under the leadership of Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume. He was represented at the meeting by the Permanent Secretary in the Political and Economic Affairs Office, Bekearedebo Augusta Warrens.

Independence Programme

According to the Federal Government, activities for the anniversary will begin with a World Press Conference on September 24.

A Juma’at Service will follow on September 25, while a Church Service is scheduled for September 27.

The programme will continue with an Independence Day Public Lecture on September 30, one day before the main anniversary.

The celebrations will culminate in a nationwide broadcast by President Tinubu to Nigerians on October 1.

Government to Highlight Achievements

The anniversary programme is also expected to provide an opportunity for the Federal Government to highlight some of the achievements and ongoing reforms of the Tinubu administration.

At the committee’s inaugural meeting, the government said the occasion would allow Nigerians to reflect on the country’s journey since independence and recognise the contributions and sacrifices of those who worked for Nigeria’s independence.

The planned celebration will take place against the backdrop of the socio-economic challenges confronting the country.

Low-Key Celebration

The SGF directed members of the organising committee to ensure that the anniversary activities remain low-key.

He also urged the committee to work with urgency because of the limited time available before October 1.

The 66th Independence Anniversary will therefore combine religious, intellectual and official activities before President Tinubu’s nationwide address on Independence Day.
