The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced a fresh power outage affecting parts of Abuja following a fault at the Apo Transmission Substation.
The latest disruption occurred after a 100MVA transformer at the 132/33kV Apo Transmission Substation tripped in the early hours of Wednesday, September 9, 2026.
TCN said the incident affected four 33kV feeders supplying electricity to parts of the Federal Capital Territory. The affected feeders are H31, H33, H35 and H37.
According to the transmission company, oil spillage was discovered on the red-phase high-voltage bushing of the transformer.
TCN said its maintenance team had commenced a detailed investigation to determine the exact cause of the fault and facilitate the necessary repairs.
The company explained that efforts were underway to restore the transformer and return electricity supply to the affected areas as quickly as possible.
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) subsequently confirmed that the transformer fault had disrupted electricity supply to several communities within the Federal Capital Territory.
Among the areas affected are Apo Legislative Quarters, Lokogoma and Apo Resettlement, alongside other parts of Abuja served by the affected feeders.
The latest blackout comes barely a day after TCN announced a separate planned electricity interruption in parts of Abuja.
That earlier outage was scheduled for Tuesday, September 8, to allow engineers to carry out annual maintenance at the 132/33kV Katampe 1 Transmission Substation.
The scheduled maintenance was expected to affect communities including Dawaki, Gwarinpa, Dutse Alhaji, parts of Kubwa, Arab Road, Bwari, Jiwa, Suleja and surrounding areas.
However, TCN’s latest announcement concerns a separate technical fault involving the Apo transformer rather than the previously scheduled Katampe maintenance.
Residents and businesses in the affected parts of Abuja are expected to experience interruptions in electricity supply while TCN works to identify and rectify the fault.
The development has renewed concerns over the reliability of electricity supply in the nation’s capital, coming shortly after another planned outage in the city.
