The convoy of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Borno State, Mustapha Gubio, was attacked by suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists while travelling through the northern part of the state.

The incident reportedly occurred at about 2:30 p.m. on Thursday along the Kareto-Damasak road, as Gubio and members of his entourage were travelling to Damasak as part of an appreciation tour.

Security sources said the attackers targeted the convoy with an improvised explosive device (IED) and rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs).

The Nigeria Police Force later confirmed that its tactical operatives responded to the attack and engaged the suspected terrorists. The attackers were reportedly forced to withdraw into the surrounding bush.

Following the confrontation, security personnel reportedly searched and cleared the area to guard against possible secondary explosives before moving the convoy to a secure location.

The Borno State Police Command spokesman, ASP Nahum Daso, confirmed that no member of the convoy was killed during the incident. He also said the attackers were believed to have fled, with one possibly sustaining a gunshot injury.

Despite the attack, the convoy was able to continue its journey, according to the police.

The Nigeria Police Force said the convoy included Gubio, government officials and other political stakeholders. The security response ensured that the group was evacuated safely without any reported casualties.

The incident comes amid continuing security concerns in parts of Borno State, particularly along routes linking communities in the northern part of the state.

Gubio emerged as the APC’s candidate for the 2027 Borno governorship election and has since commenced engagements with party members and supporters across the state.
