A branch manager of Polaris Bank has been killed by suspected kidnappers during an attack at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), Imo State.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday evening, September 6, 2026, also resulted in the abduction of two female students of the university.
The deceased banker, identified as Mr. Ossy in reports, was based in Owerri and had reportedly gone to the university to drop off his children, who are students at FUTO. He was accosted by armed men during the visit.
According to Polaris Bank, the manager’s children were able to escape from the scene, but their father was fatally shot during the attack. The bank expressed condolences to his family, friends and colleagues while stating that the incident was being investigated by the relevant security authorities.
FUTO management also confirmed that a visitor was killed during the security incident on campus. The university said two female students were abducted in the same attack and that efforts were underway, in collaboration with security agencies, to secure their safe recovery.
Following the incident, FUTO management met with Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Audu Garba Bosso, to discuss the growing security concerns around the institution and nearby communities.
The police commissioner reportedly assured the university that security operations would be strengthened around the campus and neighbouring areas, including Ihiagwa, Eziobodo, Obinze and Nekede.
The incident also raised concerns among students, with reports that a protest was being considered over the killing. The proposed demonstration was later called off after the university reminded students of its existing restrictions on unruly gatherings and activities capable of disrupting peace on campus.
FUTO subsequently urged students, staff and other members of its community to remain calm and vigilant, avoid unnecessary movement and promptly report suspicious activities to security authorities.
As of the time of reporting, the police had not announced any arrest in connection with the killing and abduction.
