FIFA President Gianni Infantino has described his recent meeting with a Nigerian delegation in Zurich, Switzerland, as a productive engagement focused on the future of football in the country.
Infantino disclosed details of the meeting after receiving the Nigerian delegation led by the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, at the FIFA headquarters.
The discussions came at a crucial time for Nigerian football following the recent resignation of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and members of the federation’s Executive Committee.
According to Infantino, the meeting provided an opportunity for FIFA and Nigerian officials to discuss the direction of football administration and development in the country.
He said the talks covered institutional matters, governance, developmental issues and areas of continued cooperation between FIFA and Nigeria.
Infantino also emphasised the importance of establishing stronger football structures and development pathways capable of creating greater opportunities for young Nigerian players.
Infantino Speaks on Nigerian Football Reforms
In a statement following the meeting, the FIFA president said both sides discussed ways to align their visions for the development of football in Nigeria.
He explained that FIFA remains prepared to support initiatives aimed at strengthening the country’s football system and creating a more effective structure for nurturing young talents.
The meeting is particularly significant because it followed a major leadership shake-up within the NFF and growing concerns over the administration of Nigerian football.
The leadership changes came after Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while the Super Falcons also missed out on qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Nigerian Delegation Meets FIFA Leadership
The delegation to Zurich included NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director-General Bukola Olopade, alongside other important figures in Nigerian football.
Former NFF President and former FIFA Council member Amaju Pinnick was also part of the delegation.
The Nigerian officials used the meeting to explain the government’s proposed reforms and discuss the steps required to reposition football administration in the country.
The engagement also addressed the recent changes within the NFF and the need to ensure that the reform process remains consistent with international football regulations.
The Nigerian side described the discussions as fruitful, with both parties examining issues affecting the administration, governance and development of football in the country.
NFF Election Process Put on Hold
The NFF leadership crisis has also affected the federation’s electoral timetable.
The elective congress previously scheduled for September 27 has been suspended while the reform process continues.
The NFF has indicated that a fresh electoral process will begin after the proposed reforms have been completed and consultations have been held with FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The move is intended to provide a framework for a more stable and effective football administration.
FIFA and Nigeria to Continue Engagement
Infantino’s comments suggest that FIFA is willing to continue engaging with Nigerian authorities as the country works to reform its football administration.
The FIFA president also wished Nigeria’s Falconets and Flamingos success ahead of their respective FIFA competitions.
The meeting is expected to play an important role in determining the next phase of Nigeria’s football reforms, particularly as the country seeks to address governance concerns and improve its development structures.
For Nigerian football, the discussions could mark the beginning of a new relationship between the country’s sports authorities and the international governing body as stakeholders work toward rebuilding the administration and strengthening the country’s football system.
