The Federal Government has appointed Dr Olugbenga A. Awe as the new Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Ondo State.
Awe’s appointment was conveyed in an official letter dated July 30, 2026, and signed by the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa.
The appointment took effect on July 29, 2026, following the departure of Senator Nora Ladi Daduut, who has taken up a new national assignment as Nigeria’s ambassador to South Korea.
Awe is a physician, academic, entrepreneur and education administrator with experience spanning the medical and higher education sectors.
He began his academic journey at the University of Lagos before pursuing postgraduate training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Internal Medicine.
He is currently an Associate Professor of Medicine at Mercer University School of Medicine in the United States, where he has combined his medical practice with teaching and academic responsibilities.
Beyond medicine and academia, Awe has also gained experience in business, education management and public service.
As chairman of FUTA’s governing council, he is expected to work with other council members on issues concerning the university’s administration, growth and strategic development.
The Federal Government is expected to draw on his experience in the United States and his understanding of higher education as he begins his new assignment at the institution.
