A final-year student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has reportedly died in an incident suspected to be suicide.
The deceased, identified as Oluwole Oluwasegun, was a student of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.
According to a statement issued by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Olarewaju Abiodun, the incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon at the student’s off-campus residence in the Damico area of Ooni Layout, Ile-Ife.
The university said its Quick Response and Security (QRS) Team was deployed to the location after receiving information about the incident.
The Nigeria Police was also contacted, and officers from the ‘A’ Division in Moore, Ile-Ife, joined university security personnel at the scene.
The student was later taken to the university’s Health Centre, where a medical doctor confirmed his death.
OAU management said information and relevant items recovered from the scene had been handed over to the police as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The institution also informed the appropriate student affairs authorities to ensure necessary follow-up, particularly concerning the welfare and support of students affected by the tragedy.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Simeon Bamire, expressed condolences to the deceased’s family, friends, classmates and colleagues.
The university further urged students experiencing serious emotional distress, relationship challenges, financial difficulties or other personal problems to seek assistance from trusted individuals and available university support services.
The institution reiterated its commitment to the welfare of students and staff, stressing that students facing overwhelming challenges should seek help rather than face such difficulties alone.
