Former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has expressed confidence in the capacity of Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, to contest for the Nigerian presidency in 2027.
Obi made the remarks on Monday in Abuja during the inauguration of Makinde’s presidential campaign office, where he described the Oyo governor as a qualified contender for the nation’s highest political office.
According to Obi, Nigeria’s political environment should not be dominated by hostility, personal rivalry or desperation. Instead, he called on politicians and citizens to focus on finding solutions to the challenges confronting the country.
He stressed the importance of unity and inclusion, noting that Nigerians should be given the opportunity to freely decide who will lead the country in 2027.
Obi also said he would be willing to work with whoever emerges as president, provided the election is conducted in a free, fair and credible manner.
He maintained that the ultimate objective should be the progress and survival of Nigeria rather than the personal interests of individual politicians.
The former Anambra governor expressed concern about the economic difficulties facing Nigerians, particularly widespread hardship and poverty. He argued that political leaders should redirect their attention towards improving the lives of ordinary citizens.
Obi Calls for a Different Kind of Politics
Obi said his decision to attend the opening of Makinde’s campaign office was intended to demonstrate political solidarity and encourage a more constructive approach to political engagement.
He advocated moving away from political disputes and disagreements that, in his view, do little to address the problems facing Nigerians.
Rather than allowing political competition to deepen divisions, Obi said politicians should compete over ideas and policies capable of improving the welfare of citizens.
He also emphasised the need for a Nigeria where individuals can succeed based on merit and opportunity rather than personal connections.
According to him, political leaders should place national interest and citizens’ welfare above partisan considerations.
Obi’s appearance at the event and his comments about Makinde come as political activities and alignments intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The former governor urged Nigerians to remain focused on the broader goal of building a more united and prosperous nation, regardless of which political candidate eventually wins the presidential election.
