As academic activities resume across Nigeria today, stakeholders in the education sector have been urged to prioritize safety, discipline and high standards to ensure a productive school term. The former Delta State House of Assembly member and current Director, PPPRP, Hon. Gibson Akporehe who gave this charge today, to mark the resumption, advised the students to take their education seriously, stressing that education remains an investment that cannot be taken away. According to Hon. Akporehe, students should embrace discipline and consistency in their studies, noting that small daily efforts in reading and completing assignments would yield better results than last-minute cramming. He emphasized the importance of character, urging students to show respect to their teachers, support their classmates and avoid distractions capable of derailing their future. Speaking on security measures, the PPPRP Director also advised students to move in groups, remain conscious of their environment and promptly report any suspicious activity to trusted adults. He charged School owners, teachers and proprietors to go beyond preparing students to pass examinations and focus on building critical thinking, digital literacy and problem-solving skills needed for global competitiveness. Hon. Akporehe further called for improved teacher welfare and training, stating that well-trained and motivated teachers produce excellent students, while also stressing the need for safe learning environments with secured fences, functional gates and regular safety drills. Hon. Akporehe call extended to parents, with a charge for schools to strengthen collaboration with them through regular updates on students’ academic performance and behaviour. To the government, the message called for increased security around schools, particularly in vulnerable areas, and full implementation of the Safe Schools Initiative, insisting that schools must never be targets. He therefore urged government at all levels to ensure timely release of education funds, upgrade infrastructure in classrooms, laboratories and libraries, and enforce curriculum standards across both public and private schools. It also advocated support for school feeding and scholarship programmes, noting that a hungry child cannot learn effectively. He said, education remains the foundation of national development, adding that when students are diligent, schools are committed, and government is intentional about security and standards, the nation would be on the path to building a better tomorrow.
