The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has identified Delta State’s technology-based teacher attendance system, Attend360, as a model that could be adopted across Nigeria to improve accountability and learning outcomes in basic education.
The Executive Secretary of UBEC, Dr Aisha Garba, made this known during a courtesy visit to the Delta State Government in Asaba.
The visit formed part of activities marking the 30th Quarterly Meeting of UBEC Management with Executive Chairmen of State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs).
The meeting, which had the theme, “Repositioning Basic Education in Nigeria to Optimise Investment and Impact,” brought together UBEC management and SUBEB chairmen from across the country to discuss ways of improving investment, innovation and implementation in the basic education sector.
Garba said the Attend360 platform demonstrated how technology could help address one of the major challenges affecting effective education delivery by monitoring teachers’ attendance and ensuring that they are present and engaged in classrooms.
She said Delta State was selected to host the meeting because of the progress recorded in its education sector, particularly in the use of technology to improve school management, teacher attendance and accountability.
The UBEC executive secretary also commended Delta for its record in accessing the Universal Basic Education matching grants, noting that the state had accessed its matching grant up to 2025.
She described Delta as one of the states making notable progress in basic education but urged the government to ensure that available funds were fully utilised and approved programmes implemented promptly.
Garba stressed that investments in education should result in improved infrastructure, better teaching and stronger learning outcomes for pupils.
She also urged Delta to sustain its investment in the sector and take advantage of the technical support available through UBEC.
Responding to the UBEC delegation, the Delta State Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme, assured the commission that the state government would continue to strengthen the education sector and expand access to quality basic education.
Onyeme said the state remained committed to improving educational standards and ensuring that investments in the sector produced meaningful benefits for teachers and learners.
The development highlights the growing role of technology in monitoring education systems and promoting greater accountability in schools across Nigeria.
