A 36-year-old Nigerian man, Babatunde Odutola, has been sentenced to 44 weeks in prison in the United Kingdom after admitting to a public-decency offence and breaching a suspended sentence order.

Odutola was arrested following a reported incident involving a female passenger travelling alone on a train heading towards Manchester Piccadilly.

According to the British Transport Police (BTP), officers responded to a report concerning Odutola after the train arrived at Manchester Piccadilly last Friday. He was subsequently arrested at the station.

The police said the incident involved inappropriate sexual behaviour and aggressive conduct directed at the woman.

Court Appearance

Odutola appeared before Manchester Magistrates’ Court on September 14, where he pleaded guilty to one count of outraging public decency as well as breaching a suspended sentence order.

The court subsequently sentenced him to 44 weeks in custody.

BTP said Odutola was of no fixed address at the time of his arrest.

Detective Constable Leonidas Christoforou, who was involved in the investigation, said the alleged conduct would have been frightening for the woman involved.

Police said investigators reviewed CCTV footage and obtained witness accounts as part of the case.

According to the detective, the evidence gathered during the investigation contributed to Odutola’s eventual guilty plea.

Investigation Concluded Quickly

The British Transport Police said the investigation and subsequent court proceedings were completed within 72 hours of the original report.

The force attributed the swift progress of the case to the rapid response of officers after the incident was reported.

BTP said its priority was to respond to reports of sexual or threatening behaviour on the railway and ensure that appropriate action was taken.

The case has now been concluded following Odutola’s guilty plea and the sentence imposed by the court.
