The University of Ibadan (UI) has introduced new guidelines for graduates collecting their Statements of Result and certificates, including penalties for delayed collection.
Under the new policy, graduates are expected to obtain their Statements of Result within six months after being notified that the documents are ready.
The university said graduates who fail to collect their Statements of Result within the six-month period will be required to pay a ₦2,500 non-collection penalty before the document can be released.
The new guidelines were contained in a special bulletin dated September 15, 2026, and signed by the university’s Registrar, Mr Ganiyu Saliu.
According to the university, a Statement of Result will remain valid for two years from the date of issuance and will serve as an interim academic document until the graduate collects the official certificate.
UI stressed that the certificate remains the institution’s permanent evidence of a graduate’s qualification.
The university therefore directed graduates to collect their certificates within the validity period of their Statements of Result.
New Certificate Collection Fees
Under the revised arrangement, certificates will be available for collection from the date of convocation until one year after the ceremony.
Graduates who collect their certificates during this initial period will pay a statutory ₦7,500 issuance and collection fee.
Additional charges will apply where certificates are not collected within the first year.
According to the guidelines, graduates who collect their certificates after one year but within five years will pay a ₦25,000 non-collection penalty.
Those who wait beyond five years but collect within 10 years will face a ₦50,000 penalty.
However, the university issued its strongest warning for certificates that remain uncollected for more than 10 years, stating that such certificates will be liable to shredding.
UI clarified that the non-collection penalties are separate from the statutory ₦7,500 certificate issuance and collection fee.
The institution urged graduates and other stakeholders to familiarise themselves with the new requirements and ensure that their academic documents are collected within the specified periods.
The new policy is aimed at establishing clear timelines for the collection of academic documents and encouraging graduates to take timely possession of their certificates.
