The Federal Government has approved ₦10 billion for the 2026 National Research Fund (NRF) Grant Cycle administered by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).
The funding is aimed at supporting research projects across 30 priority areas covering the humanities, social sciences, science, engineering, technology, innovation and other cross-cutting fields.
TETFund announced the grant through its call for concept notes, explaining that the 2026 funding cycle follows the completion of the 2025 programme, under which more than ₦6.09 billion was awarded to 174 research projects.
Who Can Apply?
The grant is open to lecturers in public tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
TETFund stated that multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research projects involving experts from different academic fields are encouraged.
Applicants must serve as Principal Investigators (PIs), who will lead their research teams and take responsibility for the implementation of their projects.
The Principal Investigator must also be based in the institution applying for the grant, with the institution serving as the coordinating body and guarantor for the proper use of the funds.
How to Apply for the TETFund Research Grant
The application process will be conducted entirely online.
Eligible Principal Investigators are required to visit the TETFund National Research Fund portal at nrf.tetfund.gov.ng to prepare and submit their concept notes.
Applicants are advised to carefully review the Research Brief and application guidelines before submitting their concept notes.
All submissions will undergo assessment by the National Research Fund Screening and Monitoring Committee.
Applicants whose concept notes are considered fundable will subsequently be invited to submit full research proposals online.
The Principal Investigator and at least one other member of the research team may also be required to defend the proposal before the screening committee.
Proposals that successfully pass the assessment process will be forwarded to the TETFund Board of Trustees for final approval and funding.
When Will Applications Open?
TETFund said the portal will open for concept-note submissions on August 31, 2026.
The application deadline is October 15, 2026, and the agency stated that there will be no extension.
