Former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Mohammed Tukur, has died at the age of 90.

Tukur died on Saturday, September 12, 2026, three days before his 91st birthday, according to a statement released by his family.

His son, Awwal D. Tukur, announced the death on behalf of the family, describing the deceased as a beloved father and patriarch who dedicated his life to serving his family, community, Adamawa State and Nigeria.

Born on September 15, 1935, Bamanga Tukur had a career spanning public administration, politics, business and economic development.

He served as Governor of the old Gongola State in 1983 and later became Minister of Industries under the military administration of General Sani Abacha between 1993 and 1995.

Tukur also served as General Manager and Chief Executive of the Nigerian Ports Authority from 1975 to 1982, where he played a role in the development of Nigeria’s maritime sector.

Beyond government, he was active in the private sector and African business circles. He served as President of the African Business Roundtable and was involved in the NEPAD Business Group, where he advocated greater economic cooperation and private-sector development across Africa.

His political career reached another major milestone in March 2012 when he became National Chairman of the PDP, then Nigeria’s ruling political party.

Tukur’s tenure as PDP chairman was marked by internal disagreements and tensions involving governors and other influential members of the party. He eventually resigned from the position in January 2014.

Following news of his death, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu mourned Tukur, describing him as a towering figure whose career covered public administration, governance, industry, politics and pan-African business leadership.

The President also recalled Tukur’s contributions to Nigeria’s maritime sector, his service as governor and minister, and his leadership within the PDP and African business community.

The family expressed appreciation to relatives, friends and well-wishers for their prayers and condolences.

Details of his Janazah and other burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the family.
