A Nigerian military aircraft has crashed in the Igbokoda area of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, sparking concern among residents and prompting an immediate search-and-rescue operation.
The incident occurred on Monday, October 5, 2026, in the coastal community, with early reports indicating that the aircraft went down in a difficult-to-access area around Igbokoda.
The Ondo State Police Command confirmed the crash, saying that details were still emerging and efforts were underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Police spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, urged residents of Igbokoda and neighbouring communities to remain calm and avoid sharing unverified information.
The Nigerian Air Force later identified the aircraft as an ATR-42 and said it was conducting a routine mission from Benin to Lagos when the accident occurred.
According to the Air Force, search-and-rescue activities had been activated in collaboration with relevant authorities and emergency response agencies.
The Aviation Minister, Festus Keyamo, also said efforts to establish radio contact with the aircraft had been unsuccessful before the wreckage was located. He disclosed that preliminary information indicated that 25 passengers and seven crew members were on board.
However, authorities had not, at the time of the latest reports, officially confirmed the number of casualties or the condition of those aboard.
The crash has caused anxiety in Igbokoda, with residents and emergency personnel focused on reaching the crash site and determining whether there are survivors.
Authorities are expected to provide further information as rescue efforts continue and investigators establish the circumstances surrounding the accident.
