The Enugu State Government has commenced commercial palm oil production as part of its efforts to revive the state’s agricultural and agro-industrial sector.
The development marks a significant step in the government’s plan to restore the fortunes of the state’s palm oil industry and position it as an important contributor to economic growth.
The commercial production is being undertaken through Enugu United Palm Products, following moves by the state government to rehabilitate and reposition its palm oil assets.
The initiative is expected to strengthen local production, create employment opportunities and increase economic activities within the agricultural value chain.
The revival of the palm oil industry is also aimed at reducing dependence on imported vegetable oils while improving the availability of locally produced palm oil for consumers and industries.
The development follows an earlier partnership between the Enugu State Government and Diamond Stripes Limited to revive the moribund United Palm Products assets. The agreement, signed in 2024, was valued at about ₦100 billion and was designed to restore commercial-scale palm oil production in the state.
The renewed investment is expected to cover various aspects of the palm oil value chain, including cultivation, processing and industrial utilisation of palm products.
Recent reports indicate that the revived company has now entered commercial production and is also planning further investment in its refinery and industrial operations.
The move comes at a time when Nigeria continues to face a substantial gap between domestic palm oil production and demand. Federal Government figures released earlier in 2026 put Nigeria’s annual palm oil output at about 1.4 million metric tonnes, against domestic demand of more than 2.5 million tonnes.
With the commencement of commercial production in Enugu, stakeholders expect the state’s renewed focus on oil palm to contribute to increased domestic supply, support farmers and processors, and generate additional revenue.
The initiative also forms part of broader efforts to diversify Enugu’s economy by expanding investment in agriculture and other productive sectors beyond traditional sources of revenue.
If sustained, the revival of the palm oil industry could provide new opportunities for farmers, investors, processors and other businesses connected to the agricultural value chain in Enugu State.
