The world football governing body, FIFA, has reportedly raised concerns over alleged Federal Government interference in the affairs of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), amid controversy surrounding the recent resignation of the federation’s president, Ibrahim Musa Gusau.
A document circulating in the media reportedly showed FIFA seeking clarification from Nigerian football authorities over claims that Gusau resigned following an alleged directive from the Presidency.
The reported letter, said to have been dated September 1, 2026, was attributed to FIFA Secretary-General Mattias Grafström.
According to the document, FIFA expressed concern that any government involvement in the removal or resignation of elected football officials could violate the principle of autonomy expected of national football associations.
FIFA’s Rules on Football Association Independence
FIFA statutes require member associations to manage their affairs independently and without interference from governments or other third parties.
The reported communication referenced provisions of the FIFA Statutes dealing with the autonomy of member associations and warned that confirmed government interference could potentially attract disciplinary measures.
FIFA was said to have requested clarification on whether Gusau’s resignation was voluntary and free from external pressure.
The organisation also reportedly sought an explanation from the Nigerian authorities concerning the circumstances surrounding the resignation and assurances that the NFF would continue operating in accordance with FIFA regulations.
Possible Sanctions
The reported letter indicated that failure to provide satisfactory clarification could result in the matter being considered by the FIFA Council.
Among the possible consequences reportedly mentioned was the suspension of the NFF from FIFA and CAF competitions and activities.
Such a development could have significant implications for Nigerian football, particularly the country’s national teams and clubs participating in international competitions.
FIFA could also consider the establishment of a joint FIFA/CAF normalisation committee to oversee the NFF’s affairs and organise a fresh electoral process if the federation’s autonomy were found to have been compromised.
NFF Rejects Alleged FIFA Letter
However, the Nigeria Football Federation has disputed the authenticity of the document circulating online.
The NFF described the purported FIFA letter as “totally fake”, insisting that it did not originate from the world football governing body.
The federation also stated that FIFA had already acknowledged and accepted the resignations of Gusau and other members of the NFF Executive Committee.
The controversy follows the resignation of Gusau, NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and other members of the federation’s executive leadership.
The resignations came amid mounting criticism of Nigeria’s recent performances, including the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Super Falcons’ failure to secure a place at the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
