Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialists have warned against the habit of sleeping with earbuds, saying prolonged use could increase the risk of hearing problems and other ear-related complications.
The warning comes amid growing concerns over the increasing use of wireless earbuds and other personal audio devices, particularly among young people who use them for music, podcasts, phone calls and other forms of entertainment.
According to health experts, keeping earbuds in the ears for extended periods can expose the ears to prolonged sound, especially when users fall asleep while listening at elevated volume levels.
Experts explained that the risk of hearing damage is influenced largely by the loudness of sound, duration of exposure and how frequently a person is exposed to it. Repeated exposure to loud audio can contribute to noise-induced hearing loss.
ENT specialists also raised concerns about the physical blockage created when earbuds remain inside the ear canal for long periods.
Continuous use may interfere with the ear’s natural self-cleaning process and contribute to the accumulation of earwax. Prolonged earbud use may also increase moisture inside the ear canal, potentially creating conditions that encourage infections.
High Volume Remains Major Concern
Health professionals stressed that the greatest concern is not simply wearing earbuds but unsafe listening practices.
People who listen at high volumes for extended periods may expose their ears to potentially harmful levels of sound without immediately noticing any damage.
Experts have therefore advised users to keep audio at moderate levels and take regular breaks from earbuds and headphones.
One practical warning sign is when other people nearby can clearly hear the audio coming from someone’s earbuds. In such situations, the volume may be excessively high.
Experts Advise Users To Protect Their Hearing
Users who experience symptoms such as ringing in the ears, a feeling of fullness, difficulty hearing conversations or a noticeable reduction in hearing are advised to stop prolonged earbud use and seek medical attention where necessary.
Experts also recommend allowing the ears sufficient breaks during the day rather than wearing earbuds continuously.
The World Health Organization has similarly promoted safe listening practices, warning that repeated exposure to loud sounds through headphones, earphones and other personal audio devices can increase the risk of hearing disorders.
While earbuds can remain useful for communication and entertainment, health professionals say responsible listening habits are essential to reduce the risk of long-term hearing damage.
