A 43-year-old Nigerian-British businessman and social media personality, Igho Ubiribo, has died following a cosmetic penis enlargement procedure he underwent while on holiday in Thailand.
According to reports from the UK, a coroner concluded that the procedure contributed to Ubiribo’s death after he suffered a fatal pulmonary embolism, a potentially life-threatening condition caused by a blockage in a blood vessel supplying the lungs.
Ubiribo, who was also known by the names “Tiny,” “Denisi” and “Ego,” was reportedly visiting Bangkok with his wife, Danielle Simba Allen, when he decided to undergo the procedure.
Reports presented during an inquest indicated that about 40 millilitres of hyaluronic acid and lidocaine were injected during the treatment at a clinic in Thailand.
After the procedure, Ubiribo and his wife reportedly returned to their Marriott hotel and went for a massage. During the session, he complained of chest pain and subsequently lost consciousness on two occasions.
He was rushed to Sukhumvit Hospital, where medical personnel initially managed to communicate with him. Doctors were reportedly informed that he had recently undergone penis filler injections and began considering the possibility of a pulmonary embolism.
A CT scan was recommended, but Ubiribo reportedly lost consciousness before the examination could be completed. He was later moved to intensive care, where doctors performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation for more than 100 minutes in an effort to save his life.
He died in the early hours of March 6.
Postmortem Findings
A subsequent postmortem examination in the United Kingdom reportedly found cellular material in Ubiribo’s lungs that was consistent with the hyaluronic acid used during the cosmetic treatment.
Pathologist John du Parcq told the inquest that the material found in the lungs corresponded with the substance used in the procedure and was consistent with a pulmonary embolism. The findings also reportedly aligned with the results of an autopsy conducted in Thailand.
Coroner Jean Harkin subsequently ruled that Ubiribo died from a pulmonary embolism associated with the cosmetic procedure.
Ubiribo was known online for showcasing his affluent lifestyle and had built a significant following on social media.
The case has also drawn attention to the potential complications associated with injectable cosmetic fillers. Hyaluronic acid fillers are used in some procedures intended to increase penile girth, but medical procedures involving injectable substances can carry serious risks when complications occur.
Ubiribo’s death has therefore raised renewed concerns about the importance of understanding the potential risks associated with cosmetic procedures and ensuring that such treatments are carried out by appropriately qualified medical professionals.
