The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of Yoruba Nollywood actress Atinuke Remilekun Kareem, who passed away after battling breast cancer.

Kareem’s death was announced on Tuesday, September 1, by the Ogun State chapter of the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN).

Owolabi Ajasa, the association’s Executive Governor in Ogun State and a colleague of the actress, disclosed the news in a statement shared on his Instagram page.

The announcement came alongside a video in which Kareem had earlier appealed to members of the public for financial assistance and prayers as she underwent treatment for breast cancer.

In the video, the actress explained that she had been receiving treatment for some time and that the cost of her medical care had placed considerable financial pressure on her family.

She also appealed for support, noting that she had two young children and needed additional assistance to continue her treatment.

TAMPAN Ogun State expressed appreciation to colleagues, fans and other well-wishers who contributed financially or offered prayers and encouragement during Kareem’s illness.

The association said the support received during her treatment was deeply valued by her family and members of the entertainment community.

Despite the efforts made to support her treatment, the association confirmed that Kareem had eventually died.

TAMPAN described her passing as a painful loss and offered prayers for her family, colleagues and loved ones as they come to terms with the development.

Kareem’s death adds to a difficult period for the Yoruba movie industry, coming shortly after the death of veteran actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, who also died following a battle with cancer.

The passing of the actress has sparked mourning among colleagues, fans and other members of Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
