Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in New York, United States, to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

President Tinubu mandated Shettima to represent him at the annual gathering, which brings together world leaders and senior government officials to deliberate on major international issues.

The Nigerian delegation includes Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, ministers and other senior government officials.

The General Debate of the 81st UNGA is scheduled to take place from September 22 to 28, 2026, under the theme, “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”

During the General Debate, Shettima is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national statement, outlining the country’s position on major international issues relating to peace and security, economic development, sustainable development and international cooperation.

The Vice President is also scheduled to participate in high-level meetings and bilateral engagements with foreign leaders, international organisations and development partners during the UNGA week.

According to the Presidency, Nigeria’s participation will focus on advancing the country’s interests, strengthening international partnerships and pushing for reforms to the global financial and multilateral system.

Speaking after arriving in New York, Shettima said Nigeria’s engagements at the global gathering would be guided by the country’s national interest and its commitment to multilateralism.

He also reiterated Nigeria’s position that global institutions should be reformed to better reflect contemporary economic and demographic realities.

The Vice President is expected to return to Nigeria after concluding his engagements in New York.
