Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan has secured a silver medal in the women’s 100m hurdles at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest, Hungary.
The former world champion clocked 12.34 seconds in the final on Friday, September 11, finishing behind American hurdler Masai Russell, who won the gold medal with a time of 12.22 seconds.
Dutch athlete Nadine Visser completed the podium after crossing the line in 12.39 seconds.
Amusan Battles to Silver in Budapest
Amusan entered the final among the leading contenders after progressing from her semi-final with a second-place finish in 12.49 seconds.
In the final, the Nigerian remained competitive throughout the race but could not match Russell’s finishing speed as the American pulled away to secure the title.
Amusan eventually stopped the clock at 12.34 seconds, finishing 0.12 seconds behind Russell and ahead of Visser.
The result gave Nigeria a podium finish at the first edition of the World Athletics Ultimate Championship.
Russell Extends Unbeaten Run
Russell continued her outstanding 2026 campaign by winning the event in 12.22 seconds.
The American had recently taken the spotlight from Amusan after breaking the Nigerian’s long-standing 100m hurdles world record with a 12.09-second run in Zurich.
Russell’s victory in Budapest further underlined her dominance in the event this season.
The final was run with a legal tailwind of +0.1 metres per second.
Amusan Takes Home $75,000
Beyond the silver medal, Amusan’s runner-up finish came with a $75,000 prize.
The inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship offers substantial financial rewards to athletes, with Russell collecting $150,000 for winning the women’s 100m hurdles title.
Amusan’s performance therefore delivered both a major international podium finish and a significant financial reward.
