Fintech company OPay has confirmed that it remains fully operational in Nigeria, while revealing that the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force are investigating a false notice claiming that the company planned to shut down its Nigerian operations.
OPay’s Chief Operating and Technology Officer, Dotun Adekunle, made this known on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, during a press conference organised by the company and broadcast on its YouTube channel.
Adekunle reassured customers that the fintech had no plans to suspend or terminate its operations in Nigeria.
“OPay is here, OPay is operating, and OPay is going nowhere,” he said.
According to him, the fake message claimed that OPay would cease operations from September 1, 2026, and advised customers to withdraw their funds to avoid losing access to their accounts.
Adekunle noted that the fact that the alleged shutdown date had already passed without any interruption to OPay’s services further demonstrated that the circulating notice was false.
He cautioned customers against acting on unverified information shared through social media and messaging platforms.
The OPay executive explained that fraudulent communications could be made to appear authentic by copying company logos, using official-looking documents and presenting convincing language.
He stressed that the appearance or widespread circulation of a message did not make it genuine, urging customers to rely on OPay’s recognised communication channels for important updates.
Meanwhile, OPay’s Chief Legal Counsel, Akinfolabi Rokosu, disclosed that the company had engaged security agencies to identify the individuals behind the fake publication.
Rokosu said the DSS and police were investigating the matter and that OPay was cooperating with the authorities by providing evidence that could help establish the identities of those responsible.
He added that the fintech had also commenced legal action against individuals allegedly involved in creating and distributing the false information.
According to him, OPay intends to pursue the matter through the appropriate legal channels and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
The development followed the circulation of a viral notice on social media claiming that OPay would suspend its Nigerian operations from September 1.
The message generated concern among some customers and reportedly encouraged users to withdraw their money from the platform.
OPay subsequently dismissed the notice as fraudulent and advised customers to verify any information concerning its services through its official platforms.
The company has now reiterated that its operations in Nigeria remain uninterrupted and urged customers to disregard the shutdown rumour.
