The Federal Government has approved a Unified Access Service Licence for Swift Telephone Network Limited (STN), paving the way for the indigenous telecommunications company to expand its operations and provide a wider range of services in Nigeria.

The licence, issued by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), gives STN the regulatory authorisation to develop telecommunications services beyond its earlier operations. The approval positions the company to pursue opportunities in mobile and fixed telephony, voice and data services.

The development adds another potential competitor to Nigeria’s telecommunications market, where established operators currently serve millions of subscribers.

STN Plans Expansion and Investment in Digital Infrastructure

STN’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Oluwole Adetuyi, described the licence as an important milestone in the company’s development, which began in 1998.

Adetuyi said the company had evolved over the years by adapting to changes in the telecommunications industry and overcoming operational challenges.

The company’s Director of Legal and Regulatory Affairs, Yetunde Okafor, said STN intends to build a telecommunications business with strong Nigerian roots while developing services capable of competing in a broader market.

She explained that the company aims to connect individuals to opportunities, help businesses reach customers and contribute to the country’s expanding digital economy.

Company Targets Job Creation and Local Expertise

As part of its expansion plans, STN said it would invest in developing engineers and other digital professionals to support its operations.

The company also plans to collaborate with Nigerian vendors and service providers, creating opportunities for local businesses across the telecommunications value chain.

Another priority is extending connectivity to communities where access to reliable telecommunications services remains limited.

STN said these initiatives would support local technical capacity, create employment opportunities and contribute to the development of Nigeria’s digital infrastructure.

The company added that details of its strategic partnerships and network rollout would be announced as it begins implementing its plans under the new licence.

STN Traces Growth to 1998

Swift Telephone Network Limited was established in 1998 under the leadership of the late Barrister Clara Adetuyi. It initially operated as a small telephone calling centre established to support the National University Games Association of Nigeria (NUGA) Games.

In 2003, the company expanded its activities by providing digital landline services in Yaba, Lagos, becoming an early participant in the development of digital telephone services in the area.

The new licence represents another stage in its effort to expand its presence in the Nigerian telecommunications sector.

New Licence Could Increase Competition

The approval gives STN an opportunity to compete across a broader range of telecommunications services. However, its impact on consumers will depend on the company’s ability to develop infrastructure, establish network coverage, attract subscribers and deliver competitive services.

The NCC’s licensing framework allows operators to provide specified telecommunications services under regulatory conditions. A Unified Access Service Licence provides authorisation for a range of services within its approved scope.

As STN prepares for its next phase of operations, its planned investments and network rollout will determine how quickly its services become available to Nigerians.
