The German Missions in Nigeria have advised Nigerians seeking German visas to follow the official application procedures and avoid relying on agents or third parties offering to secure visa appointments for payment.
The clarification was issued on Wednesday amid concerns over how applicants should begin the visa application process and obtain appointments.
The German Mission urged applicants to first determine the appropriate visa category based on the purpose and duration of their proposed stay.
Applicants advised to use official channels
According to the German Mission, Nigerians travelling to Germany for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period, including tourism and family visits, generally require a Schengen visa.
Those planning to stay for more than 90 days for purposes such as employment, education, vocational training or certain family-reunification cases are generally required to apply for a national visa.
Applicants are also expected to establish which German diplomatic mission is responsible for processing their applications before proceeding.
The mission advised prospective applicants to use the official online appointment system applicable to their visa category and follow the instructions provided.
Germany warns against paid appointment agents
The German Missions specifically cautioned applicants against paying individuals or companies simply to secure visa appointments.
It stressed that official appointment booking is free and that applicants do not need to pay agents to obtain a slot.
The warning comes as visa applicants in Nigeria continue to encounter individuals offering appointment-related services, some of whom may charge fees for assistance that can be accessed through official channels.
Applicants were also advised to ensure that they select the correct visa category when booking an appointment. An incorrect category could result in delays or require the applicant to obtain a new appointment.
Some applications can begin online
For certain national visa categories, applicants can initiate the process through Germany’s Consular Services Portal.
However, completing an online application does not necessarily remove the requirement for an applicant to appear physically at the appropriate German mission.
Applicants may still be required to attend an appointment to submit original documents, provide biometric information and undergo other necessary checks.
The German Mission therefore advised applicants to prepare all required documents and follow the specific instructions attached to their visa category.
Applicants urged to rely on official information
The German Missions encouraged Nigerians to obtain visa information directly from official German government sources rather than relying on unofficial intermediaries.
Applicants were also advised to be cautious of individuals or organisations promising guaranteed appointments or visa outcomes in exchange for payment.
Following the prescribed process, the mission said, can help applicants avoid unnecessary expenses, incorrect applications and delays.
The guidance is part of efforts to ensure that Nigerians seeking to travel to Germany understand the appropriate visa requirements and use the authorised channels throughout the application process.
