Nigerian youths have a significant role to play in strengthening democracy by becoming more actively involved in civic affairs, community development and the political process.

With young people making up a substantial part of Nigeria’s population, their participation can influence how democratic institutions function and how public officials respond to the needs of citizens.

Youth participation in democracy goes beyond voting during elections. It also involves understanding civic responsibilities, engaging public institutions, demanding accountability and contributing constructively to discussions on issues affecting communities.

Young Nigerians can also use digital platforms to promote civic awareness and encourage informed public debate. However, the growing influence of social media makes responsible communication particularly important, as misinformation and politically motivated falsehoods can affect public understanding of important issues.

At the grassroots level, youths can contribute by participating in community organisations, town-hall meetings, advocacy initiatives and other platforms where citizens engage with government representatives.

Greater youth involvement in governance can also provide opportunities for younger Nigerians to develop leadership experience and contribute new ideas to public policy and community development.

Nigeria has previously witnessed significant youth-led civic mobilisation, demonstrating the capacity of young people to draw attention to issues of national importance. Research on youth participation in Nigeria similarly identifies young people as important actors in sustaining democratic processes, while noting that political violence, manipulation and limited opportunities for meaningful participation remain challenges.

For youth participation to contribute positively to democracy, however, it must be accompanied by political education, access to reliable information and respect for democratic and legal processes.

Young Nigerians therefore have an opportunity not only to participate in elections but also to become active stakeholders in the country’s democratic development.

A stronger culture of civic participation, accountability and informed engagement among young people could help create greater connections between citizens and public institutions and contribute to the continued development of democratic governance in Nigeria.
