The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old man, identified as Okpara Chibuike Emmanuel, in connection with the alleged killing of his girlfriend in the state.

The victim, who was identified only as Chinyere, was reportedly found dead inside the suspect’s apartment at Olympic Layout, One-Day area of Enugu.

According to the police, the incident allegedly occurred on September 19, 2026, following an argument between the couple over accusations concerning who infected the other with HIV.

Police spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, said the suspect was arrested on September 21 after neighbours reportedly noticed an offensive odour coming from the apartment.

The neighbours allegedly forced the door open and discovered the woman’s decomposing remains concealed inside the toilet. The suspect was reportedly apprehended by residents before police officers arrived.

Ndukwe said police operatives attached to the Awkunanaw Division subsequently rescued the suspect from an angry crowd and took him into custody.

Police Give Account of Incident

The police spokesperson said preliminary investigations indicated that Emmanuel allegedly struck the woman on the head with a pestle during the argument, resulting in her death.

Police further alleged that the suspect wrapped the woman’s remains in nylon and concealed them inside the toilet of the apartment.

During preliminary questioning, the police said Emmanuel confessed to the alleged killing and told investigators that the dispute arose from accusations over HIV infection.

The victim’s remains have been taken to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while efforts are ongoing to establish her full identity and locate her relatives.

Investigation Underway

The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.

The command said the suspect would be arraigned in court after the investigation is concluded.

Police also advised members of the public, particularly young women, to exercise caution when visiting or spending time with people and to keep trusted relatives or friends informed of their movements.

The allegations against the suspect remain subject to investigation and judicial determination.
