Nigeria’s Super Falcons have suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to South Africa’s Banyana Banyana, ending the team’s long-standing record of qualifying for every edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The decisive defeat came in the 2027 Women’s World Cup playoff in Casablanca on Thursday night, bringing Nigeria’s uninterrupted participation in the tournament to an end. The Super Falcons had featured at every World Cup since the competition began in 1991.
Banyana Banyana Strike Twice
The Super Falcons enjoyed significant possession during the opening half at the Moulay Rachid Stadium but struggled to convert their control into clear-cut opportunities.
South Africa eventually broke the deadlock in the 56th minute when Thembi Kgatlana finished a counter-attacking move to put Banyana Banyana ahead.
Nigeria’s situation became more difficult when South Africa captain Refiloe Jane scored a second goal with 13 minutes remaining, giving the hosts a commanding 2-0 advantage.
The Super Falcons were handed a late opportunity to get back into the contest after Jane was penalised for handling the ball inside the penalty area. The South African captain received a second yellow card and was sent off.
Christy Ucheibe converted the resulting penalty to reduce the deficit to 2-1, but Nigeria could not find another goal before the final whistle.
Nigeria’s Historic World Cup Record Ends
The defeat means the Super Falcons will not participate in the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Nigeria had maintained an unbroken presence at the tournament since its inaugural edition in 1991, making the latest elimination a significant moment in the history of the country’s women’s football.
South Africa, meanwhile, progressed to the inter-confederation playoffs alongside Ghana’s Black Queens, who also secured their place in the next stage of qualification.
The result is expected to trigger a review of Nigeria’s qualifying campaign, with the team’s coach and players scheduled to address the media.
The 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup will be hosted by Brazil.
