The academic community in Nigeria is mourning the death of Professor Nnamdi Dike Umeoduag, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Tansian University in Anambra State, who died at the age of 44.

Umeoduag, a professor of Microbiology and former member of the Anambra State House of Assembly, reportedly passed away in the early hours of Friday, October 2, 2026, shortly after taking up the substantive vice-chancellor position.

Before his elevation, he served as the university’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academic Affairs and had been overseeing the responsibilities of the vice-chancellor for approximately two months.

His death has sparked sadness among colleagues, students, family members and associates, particularly because it occurred at a relatively early stage of his academic and administrative career.

University Clarifies Circumstances of His Appointment

Following reports suggesting that Umeoduag had served as acting vice-chancellor for only two days before his death, the management of Tansian University issued a clarification to explain the timeline of his service.

In a statement issued by the university’s Registrar, Rev. Anthony Uke, the institution described the reports as inaccurate.

The management explained that Umeoduag had been authorised to perform the duties of the vice-chancellor after the substantive officeholder proceeded on medical leave.

According to the university, he continued in the acting position until the substantive vice-chancellor’s tenure ended on September 30, 2026.

The institution added that his appointment followed established administrative procedures and had been communicated to the relevant government and regulatory authorities.

It therefore maintained that his assumption of the leadership role was not a last-minute decision made shortly before his death.

Academic and Political Career

Beyond his work in university administration, Professor Umeoduag also had experience in public service.

He previously represented Aguata 1 Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, combining his academic career with legislative responsibilities.

As a professor of Microbiology, he contributed to higher education and academic administration at Tansian University, where he held the position of Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs before taking on the acting vice-chancellor role.

His professional journey brought him into contact with students, fellow academics, political associates and members of the wider Nigerian academic community.

Tansian University Mourns

The university described his passing as a significant loss to the institution and the education sector.

In its statement, the management expressed condolences to his immediate family, relatives, friends, colleagues, students and everyone who worked with him.

The institution also acknowledged the grief experienced by members of its community and prayed for strength and comfort for all those affected by his death.

Umeoduag’s death has drawn attention to the contributions he made as an academic, administrator and former lawmaker.

As tributes continue, the university community and his associates are remembering his service to education and public life.

The circumstances surrounding his death have not been fully detailed in the university’s statement
