The Federal Government has released the final list of ranked and approved textbooks for use in Nigerian schools between 2026 and 2028.

The Federal Ministry of Education announced the release following the completion of the first phase of the National Textbook Ranking exercise. The approved list covers textbooks for Primary 1, Primary 4, Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS1) and Senior Secondary School 1 (SS1).

Under the new system, every approved textbook has been assigned a unique Ranking/QR Tracking Code, alongside information such as the book title, author, publisher and year of publication.

The ministry said the tracking codes are intended to improve the identification and monitoring of approved instructional materials while strengthening accountability in their selection, procurement and use.

The exercise was carried out under the supervision of the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, and the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad. The final list was approved by the Minister of Education.

According to the ministry, the introduction of the QR tracking system required additional time because individual codes had to be generated and assigned to the approved textbooks before the list could be fully validated.

Second Phase to Cover More Classes

The Federal Government said the national textbook ranking exercise is being implemented in phases.

The next phase will cover textbooks for Primary 2, Primary 5, JSS2 and SS2, with the same identification and tracking system expected to be applied to the new batch.

The ministry urged publishers, schools, education authorities, procurement agencies and other relevant stakeholders to consult the official approved list before selecting or purchasing textbooks for the affected classes.

It said the exercise is aimed at ensuring that teachers and learners have access to quality instructional materials that are relevant to the national curriculum.

The ministry also linked the initiative to efforts to improve transparency and accountability in the provision and procurement of textbooks across the country’s education system.

The complete list of the 2026–2028 ranked and approved textbooks, including the individual Ranking/QR Tracking Codes, has been made available through the ministry’s designated platform.
