The Federal Ministry of Education has released the final list of textbooks ranked and approved for use in Nigerian schools for the 2026–2028 period.

The release followed the completion of the first phase of the Federal Government’s national textbook ranking exercise. The approved materials cover four class levels: Primary 1, Primary 4, Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS1) and Senior Secondary School 1 (SS1).

Under the new system, every approved textbook has been assigned a unique Ranking/QR Tracking Code. The code is linked to important information about each book, including its title, author, publisher and year of publication.

According to the ministry, the tracking system is designed to make it easier for schools and authorities to identify approved textbooks and monitor their selection, procurement and use. The initiative is also intended to improve transparency and accountability in the provision of learning materials.

The exercise was conducted under the supervision of Education Minister Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa and Minister of State for Education Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, with the final list receiving approval from Alausa.

The ministry explained that assigning the unique tracking codes to the ranked textbooks contributed to the time required to complete and validate the final list.

The national ranking exercise will continue in phases. The next stage will cover textbooks for Primary 2, Primary 5, JSS2 and SS2, with the same identification and tracking system expected to be applied.

The Federal Ministry of Education has advised publishers, schools, education authorities, procurement agencies and other relevant stakeholders to consult the official approved list before selecting or purchasing textbooks for the affected classes.

The ministry said the initiative forms part of the Federal Government’s broader effort to ensure that Nigerian learners and teachers have access to quality, relevant and curriculum-aligned instructional materials while promoting greater accountability in textbook provision.

The complete 2026–2028 Ranked and Approved Textbooks list, including the Ranking/QR Tracking Codes for individual titles, has been made available by the ministry.
