The German Mission in Nigeria has advised Nigerians seeking visas to use only the approved application channels and avoid relying on agents or unofficial means to secure appointments.

The clarification was issued on Wednesday through the mission’s official X account amid concerns over how applicants should begin the German visa application process.

The mission advised prospective travellers to first determine the appropriate visa category based on the purpose and duration of their intended trip.

For short visits of up to 90 days within a 180-day period, including tourism and family visits, applicants generally require a Schengen visa. Those planning to stay in Germany for more than 90 days for purposes such as employment, education, vocational training or certain family-reunification arrangements are required to apply for a national visa.

Applicants were also advised to establish which German diplomatic mission is responsible for handling their particular visa application before proceeding.

The German authorities said applicants should use the official online appointment system applicable to their visa category and carefully follow the instructions provided.

For some categories of long-stay visas, applicants can initiate the process through Germany’s Consular Services Portal. However, completing an online application does not remove the need for a physical appointment where applicants may be required to provide biometric information, original documents and other supporting materials.

The mission stressed that applicants should prepare the required documents and submit them through the designated channels.

It also warned Nigerians against paying agents or third parties simply to obtain a visa appointment, noting that official appointment booking is free.

Applicants were further encouraged to ensure that their appointments correspond with the correct visa category, as mistakes could result in delays or require them to schedule another appointment.

At the visa appointment, applicants may be asked to present their documents, provide biometric details and respond to questions concerning their proposed travel and application.

The German Mission urged prospective applicants to rely on information published through official German government channels and exercise caution when dealing with individuals or organisations promising to secure visa appointments for a fee.

For eligible national visa categories, applicants can use the Consular Services Portal to submit an initial application and receive instructions concerning subsequent stages of the process.

The mission said adherence to the prescribed procedure would help applicants avoid unnecessary expenses, incorrect applications and avoidable delays in visa processing.
