The Onigbesi of Igbesi Land in Isin Local Government Area of Kwara State, Oba Moses Oyinloye Iwedunmoye I, has died days after regaining his freedom from kidnappers.
The traditional ruler was abducted on August 22 when armed men invaded Igbesi community. He was rescued five days later during a security operation around the Elerin/Ijomu-Oro axis of the state.
His death was announced on Saturday by the National President of Omo Ibile Igbomina, Bisi Fakayode, who expressed sadness over the development and prayed for the repose of the monarch’s soul.
Monarch Dies After Brief Illness
One of the monarch’s sons, Prince Olasunkanmi, also confirmed his father’s death.
According to him, the traditional ruler developed an illness after his release from captivity and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Olasunkanmi said the family had hoped the monarch would recover, but he died in the early hours of Saturday, September 12.
The circumstances surrounding the illness were not immediately disclosed beyond the family’s account.
How the Monarch Was Rescued
Oba Moses was among three people rescued by security operatives during the operation in the Elerin/Ijomu-Oro area.
According to the police, the operation followed information received at the Oro Police Station from a vigilante member who reported that one of his colleagues had sustained a gunshot injury while operating in the bush.
The Divisional Police Officer subsequently led a joint team comprising police officers, military personnel and vigilantes to the area.
Police said the suspected kidnappers opened fire after sighting the advancing security team, resulting in an exchange of gunfire. One suspected kidnapper was reportedly killed, while other members of the gang fled into the surrounding terrain.
The security team subsequently located and rescued the three kidnapped victims, who were evacuated for medical attention.
The death of Oba Moses has since triggered sadness among members of the Igbesi community and the wider Igbomina community, coming shortly after his release from captivity.
