Nigeria’s Super Eagles will face Guinea-Bissau in a crucial Group L encounter on Tuesday as both teams seek to strengthen their chances of qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
The match, scheduled for the Estadio 24 de Setembro in Bissau, is expected to be a competitive contest between two sides that opened their qualifying campaigns with victories.
With co-hosts Tanzania already assured of a place at the tournament, Nigeria and Guinea-Bissau are among the teams competing for the remaining qualification spot in Group L.
Super Eagles Seek Second Victory
Nigeria head into the encounter after securing a 2-1 comeback win against Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday.
The visitors took an early lead, but debutant George Ilenikhena restored parity before Moses Usor scored the winning goal in the second half.
The result gave Eric Chelle’s men three points and a positive start to their qualifying campaign.
Guinea-Bissau also recorded a victory in their opening fixture, defeating Tanzania 2-0 in Zanzibar. Franculino Dju and Mama Balde scored for the Wild Dogs.
The hosts currently occupy the top position in Group L on goal difference, while Nigeria are also on three points.
A victory for either side would provide an important advantage in the race for qualification, particularly as the head-to-head record is the first criterion used to separate teams level on points.
Chelle Keeps Tactical Plans Under Wraps
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has declined to disclose the formation Nigeria will adopt against Guinea-Bissau.
The Franco-Malian coach deployed a 4-4-2 formation against Madagascar before switching to a 4-2-3-1 system during the match.
Chelle explained that Guinea-Bissau presented a different challenge, noting that his technical team would assess the opponents’ strengths and weaknesses before deciding on the appropriate approach.
The coach also refused to confirm whether Nigeria would retain the same tactical arrangement used in their opening match.
His comments suggest that the Super Eagles could make tactical adjustments as they prepare for the encounter
Nigeria Hold Advantage in Previous Meetings
Nigeria have won three of their four previous senior-level meetings with Guinea-Bissau, while the Wild Dogs have recorded one victory.
Guinea-Bissau secured their only win in a 2023 AFCON qualifier in Abuja, where Mama Balde scored the decisive goal.
The Super Eagles responded in the return fixture in Bissau, claiming a 1-0 victory through a Moses Simon penalty.
Nigeria also defeated Guinea-Bissau by a narrow margin at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Côte d’Ivoire.
Despite Nigeria’s historical advantage, Tuesday’s encounter presents another challenge for Chelle’s side as they seek to maintain their winning start to the 2027 qualification campaign.
