The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is planning to establish a Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) centre in Ottawa, Canada, with the facility expected to begin operations in 2027.

The proposed centre will enable eligible Nigerians living in Canada and other parts of North America to sit for the UTME without having to travel to Nigeria solely to take the examination.

JAMB disclosed the plan following a visit by its Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, to the Nigerian High Commission in Ottawa.

According to the board, the initiative is designed to improve access to the UTME for Nigerians in the diaspora, particularly those seeking admission into Nigerian universities and other tertiary institutions.

JAMB said the Ottawa centre would serve eligible candidates in Canada as well as other parts of North America, helping to reduce the logistical challenges faced by Nigerians abroad who wish to pursue higher education in Nigeria.

The board described the initiative as part of its broader effort to make the Nigerian tertiary education system more accessible to Nigerians living outside the country.

JAMB said the move would also strengthen the connection between Nigerians in the diaspora and Nigeria’s education system while creating greater opportunities for prospective students abroad.

The planned Ottawa centre is expected to commence operations from 2027, subject to the completion of the necessary arrangements.
